When I was growing up in New York City, my family didn’t give thanks before we ate. My mother, the head of our secular Jewish household, would go unusually quiet and serious. “Let us say grace,” she’d start in a low voice, and my brother and I would seize the cue. He might say, “Grace Kelly.” I’d add, “Grace Jones” or “Grace Slick,” depending on the kind of music I was into at the time. So I didn’t know much about the whole business of preprandial blessings — until I met Sister Agnes Rooney.

In case you haven’t followed the actors’ strike, the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA are negotiating revenue sharing and policies around use of artificial intelligence (AI), among other items. I’m fortunate to have enough success acting full time that I’ve been able to pay my bills and acquire health insurance. Prior to the advent of streaming, actors like me relied on residuals paid out based on how often we appeared in a show and how successful it was. In short, actors work much more to make ends meet and still sometimes find ourselves earning less. When streaming first showed up, it had a lot of work to do to draw and maintain audiences.

The talk took place at a packed, sweltering event space on the Lower East Side, before an audience heavy on Twitter (now X) personalities and writers for small magazines. Introducing the discussion, Sunkara said that when Ahmari invited him to participate, he was skeptical. But then he read Ahmari’s book, “Tyranny, Inc.: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty — and What to Do About It,” and found, as he explained, “surprisingly very little to criticize.”The book surprised me as well. As Sunkara pointed out, the word “woke” appears only a handful of times, in most cases in reference to the blind spots of the anti-woke right. Reading “Tyranny, Inc.,” I kept wondering how Ahmari had gone from conservative cultural crusader to genuine economic populist and, more important, whether any other social traditionalists could make the same leap.

I’ve been fascinated with film music since elementary school, when I got a cassette tape called “Kid Stuff: An Afternoon at the Movies,” which featured Mr. Williams and the Boston Pops. No one exemplifies this better than Mr. Williams, who is still composing at 91. Mr. Williams accomplished this by inviting the trumpet section of the London Symphony Orchestra to blast away in its most piercing register. As he has with other cues, Mr. Williams has given this particular set piece an afterlife in concert performances. Keep your eyes shut!” Maybe then we’ll stop passively hearing film music and begin actively listening to it.

Prue Leith’s Great American Road Trip

for a road trip from Los Angeles to Florida. We imagined picnicking on mountaintops in New Mexico, sleeping under the stars in Texas and barbecuing prawns (the R.V. In the end, our 2,200-mile American journey ended up being memorable, but for none of those reasons. I’m 83, but in my head I’m a sprightly 60, and my husband, John, is 76. The thought of parking something the size of a London bus was too much, even for my gung-ho husband.

But ironically, those moments weren’t because of heavy weather, they were because of a total lack of wind. It’s often said by sailors that the most difficult moments are the calms, because when you are experiencing heavy weather, you’ve got something to keep you busy. I assume that was more challenging during the calm periods, but in general, it’s a long time to be alone. Eight months is a very long time to be in one place — you’re moving, but the place you’re in is the same. It felt like trying to summit a mountain: This is the summit and from here on it’s the descent.

Taylor Swift sends powerful message to women on tour

CNN —My first stirrings of discomfort at Taylor Swift’s show in Las Vegas hit after the infectious beat faded from fan-favorite “Cruel Summer,” the second song in her supersized set. Challenging double standardsTaylor Swift flexes during her performance at Allegient Stadium in Las Vegas. And whether we were cringing in our seats, like me, or cheering her on, also like me, her words delivered a powerful message. Like Swift, who will perform for over three straight hours on every night of this 52-stop tour, I’m also an endurance athlete. Over the course of this tour, millions of women will watch her share her success.
Throughout the decades, I’d cling to winter wonderlands I saw on television and the feeling of my first Christmas at my Catholic school. It had everything I associated with Christmas, this holiday I’d quickly fallen in love with: community, friendship, love, belonging and the best songs ever written. These qualities felt wrong in my house but right in my American life. We don’t need all this stuff.”I thought the better I made Christmas, the more American I would feel. The next day, I released my family from the pressure of having to make the right holiday memories.
Why you should reinstate the classic alarm clock
  + stars: | 2022-07-24 | by ( Jessica Bumpus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
“You use an actual alarm clock?” they asked, as though it was a fax machine. It was years later, in 1874, when the French inventor Antoine Redier became the first person to patent an adjustable mechanical alarm clock. German clockmakers reportedly soon followed and by the end of the 1800s, the electric alarm clock had been invented. From riffs on the Panasonic RC-6025 radio alarm clock, immortalized in the 1993 film Groundhog Day, to more retro designs from classic brands like Roberts. All I was after, though, was a straightforward alarm clock, much like my original.
